Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics is the area of dentistry that aims to improve the appearance, position and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth. This is usually done with braces. At O’Donovan Dental we offer both ceramic (aesthetic) fixed braces as well as removable braces such as the inman aligner

Fixed braces are suitable for both young people and adults and allow maximum control. Fixed braces can be used to improve the bite and to fix protruding teeth as well as straightening crooked teeth.

Preparation for treatment with fixed braces.

Prior to starting orthodontic treatment it is important to ensure that all the teeth are in good condition, gums are healthy and that oral hygiene is good. The first step is then to take good records so the treatment can be planned appropriately. This usually involves taking pictures, molds and if necessary x rays.

Fitting of fixed braces.

Fitting a fixed brace is made up of small square which is stuck to each tooth. These square or brackets can be either tooth coloured or ceramic. These squares are then joined with a thin wire. A fixed brace is adjusted regularly and typically appointments are about 6 weeks apart. Once treatment is completed it is important that the teeth are held in position for a period of time. This is usually done with a fixed or removable retainer.

Inman aligner

The inman aligner is a removable appliance that is suitable for adults who wish to straighten their front teeth without having to wear fixed braces. The inman aligner can be effective in as little as 6 -18 weeks.
